The Migration Research Institute began its work in September 2015 with the aim of helping to understand migration phenomena by synthesizing insights from various academic disciplines—placing particular emphasis on immigration affecting Europe. Accordingly, the Institute pays special attention to studying the political, economic, social, and cultural conditions of the most relevant countries of origin, transit, and destination. To support its research, staff members regularly travel to these regions to gain on-the-ground experience and develop a more accurate picture of ongoing migration processes. The Institute maintains active collaborations with numerous international research centers and experts, striving to facilitate effective knowledge transfer between academic institutions. In addition, it plays an active role in domestic public and scientific discourse on migration, with its researchers regularly giving professional lectures, public talks, and media interviews.
